Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Kontagora Local Government Area in Niger State is home to a rich tradition of pottery making, with local artisans producing distinctive clay pots, vessels, and decorative items. Traditional pottery has long been a significant cultural and economic practice for the people of Kontagora, but over the years, it has faced threats from urbanization, loss of knowledge, and competition with mass-produced goods. Photography, as a visual medium, offers a powerful means to document and preserve these traditional craft techniques for future generations. This study examines the role of photography in preserving the art of traditional pottery in Kontagora LGA, focusing on how photography can capture the essence of the craft, raise awareness, and encourage its continuation in the face of modern challenges.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Traditional pottery in Kontagora LGA is slowly fading as younger generations show less interest in the craft due to the proliferation of mass-produced goods. Furthermore, the knowledge of traditional pottery techniques is often passed down orally, which makes it vulnerable to being forgotten. Photography can help capture the intricate processes, artistry, and cultural significance of pottery, documenting it for posterity. However, the extent to which photography has been employed to preserve this art form and raise awareness remains underexplored. This study aims to investigate how photography can contribute to the preservation and promotion of traditional pottery in Kontagora LGA.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the role of photography in preserving traditional pottery in Kontagora LGA.
  2. To assess how photography can raise awareness about the cultural importance of traditional pottery.
  3. To explore the potential of photography in encouraging the continued practice of pottery-making among younger generations.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How can photography be used to document and preserve traditional pottery in Kontagora LGA?
  2. How effective is photography in raising awareness about the cultural significance of traditional pottery?
  3. In what ways can photography encourage the younger generation to engage in traditional pottery-making?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Photography plays a significant role in preserving traditional pottery in Kontagora LGA.
  2. Photography is an effective tool for raising awareness about the cultural significance of traditional pottery.
  3. Photography has the potential to inspire younger generations to continue practicing traditional pottery-making.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant because it highlights the role of photography in preserving cultural heritage and promoting traditional crafts. By documenting pottery-making processes, the study will contribute to the understanding of how visual media can help preserve intangible cultural heritage and encourage the continuation of traditional practices. The findings could benefit policymakers, cultural preservationists, and local artisans working to revitalize traditional crafts.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on traditional pottery in Kontagora LGA and examines the role of photography in preserving and promoting this art form. It does not extend to other crafts or regions outside Kontagora. Additionally, the study is limited to the visual documentation of pottery rather than exploring other aspects of pottery production.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  1. Traditional Pottery: The craft of making pottery using traditional methods, often passed down through generations.
  2. Photography: The art or practice of taking photographs to document, convey, and promote cultural, social, or environmental issues.
  3. Cultural Heritage: The traditions, customs, artifacts, and practices passed down from generation to generation within a community.
